Car and Truck Repair, Done Right the First Time

Our ASE-certified technicians use computerized diagnostic equipment and quality NAPA parts. We explain what we find in plain language.

Maryland State Inspection

We're a Maryland State Police authorized vehicle inspection station, at the area's lowest price. If your vehicle passes, you leave with the Inspection Certificate you need to register it in Maryland.

  • Window tint: if your vehicle has aftermarket tint, the law requires us to measure light transmittance on every window, and a tint-measuring fee applies. Passenger cars need at least 35% light transmittance. To skip the fee, remove the tint before your inspection.
  • Registering next: Fred's Tag and Title in Cockeysville handles registration, or visit any MVA office.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is the cheapest way to keep a car on the road. A well-maintained vehicle can last 200,000 miles or more, and Maryland's four seasons are hard on engines, tires and fluids.

  • Oil and filter changes
  • Tire rotation
  • Air, cabin and fuel filters
  • Fluid replacement and flushes
  • Engine tune-ups
  • Wheel alignment
  • Timing belt replacement

Under factory warranty? Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) generally lets you have scheduled maintenance done at any qualified shop, including a NAPA AutoCare Center, without voiding your warranty, as long as the right parts and procedures are used.

Check Engine Light & Diagnostics

Every car built since 1996 uses OBD-II: the engine computer watches its sensors and turns on the light when a reading falls outside its limits. A trouble code is only a starting place, not a diagnosis, so we don't just read the code and sell you a part.

  1. Retrieve the stored trouble codes.
  2. Analyze what they point to in the system.
  3. Pinpoint test the circuit and components with specialized equipment to find the actual failure.

Even if the car seems fine, get the light checked. A light that's already on can hide a new, more serious problem.

Brakes

We install quality NAPA brakes. On disc brakes we inspect the rotors, then machine or replace them before fitting new pads. Drum brakes get the same care.

Brake fluid flush: brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, so flushing it every two years is a great habit. We replace the fluid throughout the system, master cylinder reservoir included.

Heating, Cooling & Air Conditioning

Antifreeze cools your engine through the radiator and heats your cabin through the heater core. We service the radiator, water pump, thermostat, cooling fan, expansion tank and heater core, and we stock the correct antifreeze for any vehicle.

Flush vs. drain and refill: a drain and refill only replaces the coolant in the radiator. A full flush back-flushes the whole system and replaces all of it, which is why we recommend it.

We also diagnose and repair air conditioning, so the cabin stays cool through a Maryland summer.

Electrical

Batteries, alternators, starters, solenoids, fuses, ignition parts and vehicle computers. Our battery service tops off, charges and load-tests your battery, and tells you honestly when an old battery needs replacing instead of another charge.

Tires & Alignment

Tire replacement for cars and light trucks, plus rotation and wheel alignment. Correct inflation and alignment make tires last longer and save fuel.

Car-Care Questions We Hear Every Week

How Often Should I Rotate My Tires?

Every other oil change, or about every 5,000 miles. Skipping rotations is one of the biggest causes of tires wearing out early.

Do I Really Need to Replace My Timing Belt at the Recommended Interval?

Yes. On many engines a broken timing belt causes major engine damage, and that repair costs far more than replacing the belt on schedule.

What Does It Mean When My Check Engine Light Comes On?

A sensor or computer-controlled part that manages engine performance or emissions has reported a problem. The car may seem fine, but have it checked to prevent bigger problems and a failed emissions test.

What Should I Do If My Car Starts to Overheat?

Pull over safely and shut the engine off as soon as you can. Don't open the radiator cap, since hot coolant can burn you. Have the car towed in, because driving while overheating can seriously damage the engine.

How Often Should I Change My Oil?

Follow the interval in your owner's manual. If you go longer between changes, use an oil rated for extended intervals. We can tell you what's right for your vehicle and how you drive.

My Engine Oil Looks Milky Brown. What Does That Mean?

Coolant is getting into the oil, often from a blown head gasket, a failed transmission cooler or a cracked casting. It's serious: bring it in as soon as possible.

Is Synthetic Oil Worth the Extra Cost?

For turbocharged or high-output engines, vehicles that tow, and vehicles driven in extreme heat or cold, usually yes. It costs more than conventional oil but can allow longer change intervals and protects the engine better at startup.

When Should I Replace My Fuel Filter and Spark Plugs?

A fuel filter about every 30,000 miles, or as your owner's manual says. Standard spark plugs about every 30,000 miles; many newer engines use long-life plugs rated for 100,000 miles.

How Do I Replace a Blown Fuse?

Use a fuse with the same amperage printed on the old one. If the new fuse blows again, have the circuit checked, because something is drawing too much current.
